Benjamin Mendy, a Manchester City defender, was remanded in custody after appearing at Chester Magistrates’ Court a day after being charged with four charges of rape and one act of sexual assault.

Mendy is suspected of crimes against three women, according to the evidence presented in court.
The 27-year-old, who was denied release, will most likely remain in detention until his next hearing on September 10, unless his legal team files an appeal against the decision to deny him bail.
Mendy appeared in court wearing a red Balenciaga hoodie and black Adidas jogging pants, standing expressionless with his arms folded as the allegations were read to him through a French interpreter by the court clerk.
Cheshire Constabulary stated in a statement on Thursday that the offenses against Mendy are claimed to have occurred between October 2020 and August 2021.
Mendy, who has ten caps for France and won the World Cup in 2018, was signed by City in 2017 from AS Moncao for a sum in the area of 52 million pounds ($71.32 million).
He has three Premier League titles with City, but injuries have curtailed his playing time, with the left-back requiring knee surgery during the 2018-19 season.
